So, i have never been a huge fan of American Idol...not that i have a problem with those who do....it just doenst mesch well with me.
but last night, cristin and i were doing various things around the house and AI was on and we were casually listening to it. they are doing this big humanitarian effort called "idol gives back"---in and of itself it was really great because it raised millions of dollars for relief in Africa.
HOWEVER
the last number they do on the show is a praise song. a song about Jesus. the song was called "shout to the Lord." the words of this song are quite powerful. its not amazing grace. amazing grace can be sung very tritely. because ANYONE can get grace, and brokeness. but to sing 'shout to the lord', you are declaring a very distinct theology and beleif of god. to sing,
"my savior, my refuge....mountains bow down and the seas will roar at the sound of your name...i sing for joy at the work of your hand...forever i love you forever i stand"---those were words sang by all the american idols last night.
what do you do with that?
is that okay?
is it a horrible commentary on the christian subculture that it has become so trite, so ineffective, so useless, and so un-impactful on our culture that we can sing a song that has such powerful words to God as a whym? as a marketing ploy?
why sing the song?
i am sorry....idoler's, but you dont get to sing that song? right? unless you beleive it, its totally useless.
the only reason i can think of that they would sing that song (or any christian song for that reason) is because they wanted to use it to get Christians to give.
problem number 2. why do we as christians need american idol luring us in to see and interact with social justice? why isnt the church leading these efforts.
we have failed. we have failed.
